Introduction

Initially, the Department of Mathematics was established in 1928 in Islamia College affiliated with the University of the Punjab. The department was taken over by the University of Peshawar in 1950. The department, since its inception, has been engaged in running M.Sc. programme and has produced graduates who are serving the country in many disciplines. The department launched its M.Phil programme in 1992 whereas Ph.D. programme started in 2001. The department also started B.Sc (Hons) two years programme in Mathematics from session 2004-05 both in morning as weel as in evening shift. The same has now been revised and renamed as M.Sc two years program.

The department’s Library is equipped with a modest number of latest books in almost all important branches of mathematics, including some back volumes of International Mathematical Journals. The department possesses its own computing as well as Internet facilities to cater to the needs of the students and faculty members engaged in research.

Individual/group research is carried out in the fields of Algebra, Mathematical Statistics and Functional Analysis. The department organizes Seminars, Workshops etc. from time to time to bring together experts and researchers working in different disciplines of mathematical sciences. The department also organizes refresher courses for college teachers, which are aimed at exposition of the latest trends of research and development in Mathematics.

Vision

To act as a leader in the advancement of Mathematics and promotion of Science and Technology in the country.

Mission

The endavour of the Department of Mathematics University of Peshawar is to enhance the standard of mathematics teaching and quality of research bringing its credibility at par with the advanced countries of the world. The ultimate aim is to attain a situation where Pakistani degree holders in mathematics will be proud of their degrees.

Objectives

To engage in goal-oriented high level teaching and research.

  • To promote cooperation and inter-disciplinary relation ships with other teaching and research organizations of the country and abroad.
  • To arrange conferences, seminars and refresher courses for the promotion of mathematics education and research.
  • To provide a platform to the students so that to exploit their academic potentials and teaching skills.

Courses

M.Sc (Previous)

Real Analysis (Syed Amanat Shah)
It is that branch of Mathematics which deals with the minute study of real number system, limit & continuity of functions. Real analysis is a very important subject of Mathematics & is extensively applicable in many fields of Mathematics whether pure or applied.

Algebra-I (Mr. Qaiser Iqbal)
This course is designed on the essential topics of linear algebra & introduction to Group Theory. The linear algebra is useful for students to be trained for many advance mathematics courses. For this reason, this part of the course contains the central theme of finite dimensional real vector spaces & their linear transformation. The second part of this course is the basic group theory, which is an important part of algebra & it has many applications in various scientific disciplines. It includes the concept of a group with examples & long ranges theorems & its applications.

Complex Analysis (Mr. Asad Ullah)
In Mathematics, we are to face many problems which cannot be treated within the domain of real number system. In such circumstances, the branch complex analysis. deals with the problem. It has many applications in Physics & Engineering. This course contains integrations by contours, conformal mapping & Functions of special kind.

Topology (Dr. Gulzar Ali Khan)
This course deals with the topological properties of figures. With the help of this, we can study complicated geometrical figures by decomposing them into simplest geometrical fragments. It is used in Geography, Physics & in studying different crystal structures in chemistry.

Programming in C: (Mr. Asad Ullah)
This course is designed to train students in computational Mathematics. It contains C Language as scientific language for programming which give skill & wide vision to the students in business, education & application.

M.Sc (Final)

Algebra-II (Mr. Qaiser Iqbal)
The theory of groups is a basic and fundamental part of algebra. This theory has its uses in various branches of scientific knowledge. In particular, its role & applications in Engineering & Physics are notable. Apart from the basic & essential part of this theory, it includes some advanced topics e.g. the theory of slow & its applications, the classes of Nilpotent & soluble groups, simple groups & presentation of groups.

Functional Analysis (Dr. Gulzar Ali Khan)
This course is comparatively of recent origin which provides a common language for various branches of mathematics. For example, its techniques in the theory of operators on Hilbert spaces etc., have important applications in Quantum Mechanics. Its methods & results are also used in Engineering, theoretical physics, mathematical physics, applied analysis and other areas of mathematics. The course includes topics on Normed Linear spaces, banech spaces, Geometry of Hiebert space and Finite Dimensional Spectral Theory.

Mathematical Statistics (Dr. Islam Noor)
This course deals with probability & Mathematical Statistics. Different distributions are used to handle the probabilistic type problems. Topics like correlation &Regression Analysis are also studied to establish the linear relationship among variable quantities.

Numerical Analysis (Mr. Naseer Ahmad)
This course focuses on the methods and techniques of obtaining approximations for solutions of different mathematical problems. It is used in almost every branch of science and social sciences. In particular, this subject plays a very important role in studying behaviors of different living things.

Measure Theory & Integration (S. Amanat Shah)
In this subject , we study the different measures of more general sets in more general spaces. Apart from intervals & the real space, it also deals with different behaviors of proper & improper integrals of all bounded & unbounded functions on differents sets .

Viva-Voce
Apart from the above mentioned courses, each student is required to appear in viva voce examination.
