Introduction

The Department of Psychology came into existence in 1964. Dr.Shahabuddin Muhammad Moghni, laid the foundation of Psychology Department as its first Professor and Chairman. Initially, it offered Masters programme of two years duration. Ph.D. and M.Phil programmes were offered in 1973 and 1978, respectively. Bi-monthly seminars and Annual conferences are other major activities of the Department. The Department, presently offers specialization in three major areas viz Counseling, Clinical, and Assessment at M.Sc. And at M.Phil/Ph.D levels it is offering Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Psychological Testing, Counseling, Developmental Psychology, and Experimental Psychology. The Department is equipped with a Library, Laboratory for experimentation and a Computer laboratory. The Department has now started B.Sc. (Hons). Evening shift has already been started.

Mission
The Psychology Department provided academically sound courses that promote knowledge of Psychological concepts, issues, methods, theories, applications, and critical thinking. It is committed to excellent teaching, nationally recognized research and outstanding service to the university, profession, and community.

The Department of Psychology aspires to the highest standards of excellence in teaching, research, and service, which striving to become a more inclusive and diverse academic community that respects differences among individuals.

Objectives

  • To provide excellent education.
  • To train and prepare graduates students for careers in scientific psychology and scientifically based professional practice.
  • To carry out these educational goals in the context of a research-oriented department founded on the principles of scholarly excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and wide-ranging service.
  • To assist students in cultivating skills and knowledge necessary for success in endeavors after completion of the degree.
  • To develop the students, generic skills in research methods, statistics and critical thinking, which will allow them to evaluate future trends in the field of Psychology and prepare them for a lifetime of learning.
  • To provide each student with a basic knowledge of general psychology and of the specially areas of Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology and Psychometrics.
  • To provide didactic instruction and supervised training in psychological research. Out intent is to enable each student to become proficient in conducting research and evaluating the research of other.
  • To provide didactic instruction and supervised training in the practice of Clinical Psychology, Counseling psychological assessment and intervention.
  • To encourage students to integrate empirical findings and theoretical frameworks with clinical and counseling practice.
  • To encourage appreciation of diversity across content areas of science and practice.
  • To prepare each student to make ethically and legally informed decisions about clinical, counseling, psychometrics, research, and other professional issues.
  • To foster an identification with profession of clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and psychological assessment, participation in professional communities, and active professional service.
  • To foster collegial and appropriate professional relationships.

  • Through fulfilling the area requirements in the psychology major, students will acquire a broad base of general knowledge in psychology.
  • Majors will synthesize and critique relevant empirical literature in at least one coherent and integrative review paper or research proposal in at least one of their upper division psychology courses.
  • Students will learn how psychological research and theories can be understood within a cultural context.
  • Students will learn how psychology theories and research can be applied to issues of understanding and improving the quality of life for individuals and societies.

M.Sc (Previous)

Historical and Contemporary Psychology (Ms.Summiya Ahmad)
The History of Psychology deals with the roots it has in philosophy, mythology, medicine, physiology, physics and astronomy among other subjects, and the influence they have in history in complex and often indirect ways. It deals how it emerged with the passage of time.

Learning, Cognition and Motivation/Practical (Ms.Erum Irshad)
This course include issues related to General Psychology specifically focusing on phenomena of perception, learning, memory, thinking, feelings and motivation.

Statistics/Practical (Dr. Maher Bano)
This course includes all the Psychological Statistics starting from introduction, parametric, non-parametric tests, graphical representation of data to advanced statistics like Multivariable analysis.

Research Methodology/Practical (Ms.Saima Zaffar)
This course includes History of Science & Scientific method of investigation, Problem, Hypothesis Research designs, ethics and data collection, Report writing and Psychological Research in Pakistan.

Psychological Testing and Measurement /Practical(M. Jahanzeb Khan)
It is about the characteristics of psychological test e.g. Norms, reliability, validity, Item Analysis, uses of tests and ethical considerations.

Psychopathology/Practical (Dr.Mrs.Rahat Sajjad)
This course includes the history of psycho pathology. Details about all the theoretical models. Etiology of all kinds of mental disorders and symptoms. Different kinds of psycho therapies and mental retardation.

M.Sc (Final)

Social Psychology/Practical

(Ms.Saima Zaffar / Ms. Summiya Ahmad)
It studies individual behavior in social content. Major areas are socialization, Human Motivation and Social Perception, liking and interpersonal attraction, Helping behavior, Attitude, Groupdymanics, Leadership, Mass Media and Communication, conformity and compliance and social Psychological Problems in Pakistan.

Behavioral Neuroscience / Practical (Dr. Maher Bano)
This course includes the nature, scope and contributions, Darwinian theory of evolution, Human brain, CNS, PNS, ANS measures of behavior, Motivation, endocrinology emotions, neuroanatomy etc.

Developmental Psychology / Practical (Dr. Farhana Jehangir)
It includes the nature and foundation of Development psychology, different developmental states and physical, social, psychological aspects of development, cross-culture studies and development.

Organization Behavior deals with different theoretical concepts and foundation, attitude, motivation goal setting and rewards, decision making and careers in organization.

It includes the significance and history of Educational Psychology, Cognitive, moral, social development, concept learning and assessing class room learning, class room management.

Educational Psychology / Practical (Dr. Rahat Sajjad)
This course includes the nature, history of personality theory, different theories of personality, social psychological theories, Indigenous / Islamic theories of personality.
